Railing thru Europe: Stop 9.1 Sweden – Malmo and Stockholm

Just north of Denmark in the Scandinavia Peninsula is the country of Sweden. One might immediately associate Sweden with IKEA as it is where the giant furniture store originated. Yup…that brand has done its country proud that it has so many branches across the globe and oh… the swedish meatballs…. yummy… ahem..yah where was i? right… Having been listening to music from swedish bands since young (ABBA, Roxette, Ace of Base and The Cardigans etc), we wondered what kind of impression would Stockholm leave on us?

However, a quick stopover at the swedish town of Malmo is required and we were left with 4 hrs of exploring to do before taking the next train to Stockholm.

Malmo

St Peter's Church

Stockholm

The train to Stockholm awaits!

A single trip even though it was only for 2 stops, cost us about 4 euros per person on the tunnelbana (underground)

Our accomodation for the next few days...on a boat! more pictures on it later

Giant balloons of Shrek and Donkey sitting on the top of the cineplex

Sculptures in front of the Stockholm Concert Hall where the awarding of the nobel prizes and the polar music prize is held annually

We havent seen a foodcourt such as this for a long time since we left Singapore! It is located just north of the Cineplex in Hötorget

The cobbled streets of the old town, Gamla Stan

The Stadsgards terminalen where our lodging is located... to our delight, we learned later that the port of boarding for our Viking Cruise to Finland is also located nearby!

Initially we had thought that it was not gonna be an easy night's sleep due to the constant rocking of the boat but it turned out we had slept like babies in a rocking crib haha!

The Stock Exchange Building near the old town square

Some iconic buildings in Stortorget, the oldest square in Stockholm

The Storkyrkan, is the oldest church in Gamla Stan

Stockholm bus terminal where we purchased our tickets for the Viking Cruise to Helsinki

The Stadshuset, City hall

The distinctive red building of St Jacob's Church

The Royal Palace where the changing of the guards takes place

This is actually another youth hostel on a ship

The Nordic Museum, on the island of Djurgarden in central Stockholm

Hotdog with a loadful of mash potato!

On our way back to our lodging, we caught this group of "pirates" performing. They were playing their instruments, prancing around and even grabbed people to dance with them!

The next day we are off to the Palace to witness the changing of the guards

We were caught by surprise when the band played to Abba! Yee: I loved watching military bands perform and have lots of admiration for them. They give me the goosebumps.

What better way to cross the Baltic sea than on a Viking Cruise ship! Onwards to Helsinki and the Artic Circle!
