Set on 2 islands between lakes, Savonlinna’s a classic Lakeland settlement with a major attraction: Perched on a rocky islet, one of Europe’s most visually dramatic castles, the Olavinlinna play host to the world-famous opera festival in July. Unfortunately, we came a tad to early as Savonlinna also play host to the Mobile Phone Throwing World Championship (well? what would you expect from a country where NOKIA originates) annually in late August. From Helsinki, it takes 5 hours by train to Savonlinna which requires a change via a regional train service at Parikkala. It was a sweltering journey during summer on the regional train.
This picture surely looks like it’s 7am in the morning but it is actually 11pm during summer. For people like us who live in countries near the equator, it never fails to fascinate just how long daylight can be for folks who live much further up north. The scenic surrounding 15th century Olavinlinna Castle in this video seems so surreal.
Next up, although its a little too early…but nevertheless, we gonna go meet Santa Claus in his Village!
Luv, Yee
