Railing thru Europe: Stop 12.4 Germany – Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber

In our Lonely Planet guide, we had read about the ‘Romantic Road’ of Germany, a route that highlights walled towns and picturesque villages in western Bavaria from Würzburg to Füssen. We wanted to see for ourselves but couldn’t afford the time to visit all of them, however we did managed to sneak day trips in between our journey to Munich to see two. One of them would be the well-preserved medieval walled town of Rothenburg Ob der Tauber.

One of the town featured in the 'Romantic Road' (Romantische Straße). We got off here to catch a connecting train to Steinach before continuing to Rothenburg ob der Tauber

After 3 trains and about 3 hours later, we arrived! We left our backpacks in the station lockers and were off to explore the city

The eastern entrance to the town. The Röder Tower Gate.

Röder Arch and the Markus Tower (Markusturm) at the background

To the left of the main square is the Town hall and Historical Vaults and to the right is the City Councilors Tavern where you can find the Tourist Information Centre

We noticed that there was a band performance somewhat like a student exchange program from America and Indonesia

From here you can proceed on towards the next destination of the 'Romantic Road'

Christmas plays a huge part in bringing tourists to Rothenburg ob der Tauber and the town also has a reputation as a town of eternal christmas due to the many shops selling handcrafted christmas gifts and souvenirs. It also boosts a christmas museum (Weihnachtsmuseum) operated by Käthe Wohlfahrt (an international chain of year-round Christmas shops). In December, it gets even more crowded as tourists flood the city for the annual Reiterlesmarkt (Christmas Market) and the city is transformed into a winter wonderland that’s one of the most romantic in Germany.

Schneeballen, which is basically fried egg dough sprinkled with a variety of toppings like sugar, cinnamon or chocolate. It is a specialty here and one should not give it a miss!

Next stop, Fussen and its fairy tale castles!
